John Stones reacts to Ilkay Gundogan’s ‘back’ message amid Man City exit update

Manchester City could lose a pivotal player in their midfield as Ilkay Gundogan is the subject of interest from Galatasaray this summer.

Gundogan returned to Man City last year for a second spell following a season at Barcelona, but he was unable to add to his extensive trophy collection from his first seven years at the club.

Following just one season back in Manchester, Gundogan could depart again, this time to Turkey and Galatasaray.

Former Man City star Leroy Sane has already signed for Galatasaray this summer from Bayern Munich and the Turkish club can offer Gundogan Champions League football next season.

Gundogan focusing on Man City preparations

Despite speculation circulating around his future, Gundogan has reported to pre-season training at Man City ahead of the new campaign.

City have started pre-season later than most of their Premier League rivals due to their participation in the Club World Cup this summer.

Pep Guardiola’s side though fell at the last 16 stage of the tournament to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal after extra-time.

Gundogan took to Instagram to confirm his return to City, with the caption: “Back in the office,” which was liked by team mates John Stones and Manuel Akanji.

Guardiola facing transition in City midfield

Football Insider Verdict

It was exclusively revealed by Football Insider that Man City could block Gundogan’s exit from the club, with his experience a factor in helping Guardiola transition his squad into a new era.

Guardiola has already lost the influential Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli, and Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips are also expected to depart.

With Rodri returning to form following a long injury lay-off, and new signings potentially needing time to adapt, Gundogan could have a big part to play in midfield if he stays.

Guardiola will therefore be keen for the 34-year-old to stay for another season, as he attempts to regain the Premier League title off rivals Liverpool.

Gundogan’s influence on the team last season was not as great as over his first spell at the club, with the German suffering from lack of form at times, however his leadership skills could still be pivotal.
