John Terry and Kieran Trippier react to Phil Foden’s Man City showdown message

Phil Foden gave fans a glimpse into preparations as Man City gear up for their Club World Cup opener.

Man City are looking to bounce back from a season to forget, having ended the 2024/25 campaign without a single piece of silverware for the first time in eight years.

But with the Club World Cup now in focus, Pep Guardiola’s side have a chance at redemption when they take on Wydad AC on 18 June.

As for Foden, it remains unclear whether he will make the starting XI for the clash.

Foden saw his Man City minutes reduced by Guardiola towards the end of last season, starting just one of the club’s final seven Premier League fixtures.

Now, the academy graduate has delivered a message to supporters as the squad prepare for their first fixture of the summer tournament.

Phil Foden sparks reaction with Club World Cup training update

Foden offered fans a glimpse into City’s training preparations with a recent Instagram post, tagging the Club World Cup page and adding an hourglass emoji to signal the countdown to kick-off.

A number of teammates showed their support, with the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Rico Lewis and Rayan Cherki—who joined City ahead of the registration deadline—all engaging with the post.

Other notable names also responded, including Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier and Chelsea legend John Terry, who both liked the update.

After a disappointing end to the 2024/25 campaign, there’s speculation Guardiola could leave Foden out of the starting line-up for Man City’s opening match of the tournament.

Earlier in the season, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that members of Man City’s backroom staff had raised concerns about Foden’s performances.

The former PFA Player of the Year struggled to replicate the form that helped lead City to a fourth consecutive Premier League title the previous year, but the Club World Cup could provide the perfect opportunity to rediscover his spark.

While new signings like Cherki adds depth and competition for Foden, City are also looking to strengthen elsewhere, with the goalkeeper position under review.

Football Insider revealed that Man City have a strong interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as doubts continue to grow over Ederson’s future at the club.

The Brazilian is attracting interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League, as City brace for what could be one of their most significant summer rebuilds in recent years.
