Johnny Kenny stuns with landmark Celtic strike v Aberdeen – ‘This boy can finish’

Johnny Kenny scored his first-ever goal for Celtic, as the Hoops eased to victory over Aberdeen on the penultimate matchday of the Scottish Premier League season.

The Glasgow side have already wrapped up the league, sitting 17 points clear of bitter rivals Rangers at the top of the table.

There was no let-up from the champions though, who dispatched Aberdeen without any issues, leaving Pittodrie with a 5-1 win.

Maik Nawrocki gave Brendan Rodgers’ side the lead and Keven Nisbet headed the home side level, before Hyun-Jun Yang put Celtic back in front before the break.

Luke McCowan and Adam Idah added goals, either side of Kenny’s special moment.

Kenny hits the mark

Kenny was handed his first-ever Celtic start, as Rodgers named a much-changed side to give some of his squad a run-out.

His moment came in the 54th minute, with the league leaders already in a commanding position, leading 3-1.

Luke McCowan drifted out to the left wing and clipped in an inch-perfect ball towards the head of Kenny.

The 21-year-old flicked his header towards the far corner, the ball bouncing beyond the stricken Dimitar Mitov and into the back of the net.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was impressed with the goal, saying live on Sky Sports (14 May): “Brendan Rodgers said pre-game ‘this boy can finish’, and he finishes this brilliantly.”

Kenny a popular scorer

Kenny joined from Shamrock Rovers in January, but has barely got a kick since his move to Glasgow, making just six appearances before the Aberdeen clash.

However, when handed his first start he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, ensuring he keeps himself in Rodgers‘ mind for Scottish Cup final selection.

Celtic fans were delighted to see the forward hit the back of the net, and social media was full of praise for the young man.
