Jonathan David to Newcastle: O’Rourke shares update today
Newcastle United will not have a clear run at striker target Jonathan David next summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 24-year-old Lille star is out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and has decided to explore his options as a free agent in the summer window.
Lille would consider cashing in on David in the January transfer window but the player is set on staying in France and rejecting any advances in the new year.
Newcastle have sent scouts to watch him in action for Lille as they ramp up their pursuit of the Canada international.
However, it is believed they will be joined in the race by Serie A and La Liga clubs in a new blow for the Magpies.
Other Premier League clubs have also held a historic interest in the red-hot striker.
Football Insider revealed in July that Tottenham held talks with Lille over a potential deal for David, while Chelsea and West Ham were also monitoring his situation.
Newcastle will face stiff competition for free agent David
Callum Wilson, who is the understudy for Alexander Isak, is out of contract at the end of this season and the Magpies are yet to open talks over a renewal.
Newcastle have been keen to improve their striking options in recent transfer windows but have been hamstrung by Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
David has hit 13 goals and contributed two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions this term.

The Canadian is a proven goalscorer on the European stage, scoring 20 goals in 51 games for Gent and Lille in continental competition.
Isak and Harvey Barnes (four) are the top scorers for Eddie Howe’s side this term.
