In their previous encounter, Bruce’s side beat promotion chasers Derby 1-0 on home soil when James Chester’s header was the difference during the tight encounter.
It was the first time since the turn of the year that Villa had picked up three points after losing five games on the bounce.
They take on a Bristol City side that are four places below Villa in the table and six points behind, but they did pick up a point at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
During the reverse fixture in August, Lee Johnson guided his team to a 3-1 against Villa with Di Matteo in charge of the club at that time.
