Jordan Henderson and Ivan Toney respond to Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool message

Cody Gakpo was one of several Liverpool players to get in on the act as they routed Tottenham 5-1 to seal the Premier League title.

Arne Slot‘s side waltzed to their 20th league crown and overcame an early setback to sweep Spurs aside on Sunday; their advantage over second-placed Arsenal extended to an unassailable 15 points at the top.

Dominic Solanke’s twelfth-minute header had silenced Anfield, but Luis Diaz’s equaliser within four minutes immediately got the Reds back on track and from there on, Liverpool were in cruise control.

Alexis Mac Allister capitalised on a Tottenham mistake to score Liverpool’s second before Gakpo added a third ten minutes later, and Mohamed Salah struck his customary goal midway through the second half.

Destiny Udogie’s accidental own goal completed the rout for the Reds, who seal the title with four games to spare in the clinical fashion Liverpool fans have come to expect from Slot’s dominant side this season.

Cody Gakpo sends message to Liverpool fans

Liverpool’s confirmation of the Premier League title has long since been expected this season, but the excitement began to boil over as the full-time whistle neared at Anfield and pandemonium soon ensued.

Gakpo’s clinical strike in the 35th minute – leaving Brennan Johnson on his back in the process – proved to be the clincher after Spurs’ early opener, and rounds off the Dutchman’s best season at Anfield so far.

When fit, Gakpo is a shoe-in for Arne Slot’s starting XI at Liverpool

With 17 goals and six assists this season, Gakpo has found his best form on Merseyside this term and is a shoe-in for Slot when fit; and the 25-year-old took to Instagram with a heartfelt message (27 April).

In a post liked by Ivan Toney and Jordan Henderson, the latter also leaving a comment of applause, Gakpo said: “Childhood dream fulfilled — Premier League champions 2024/25. So proud of everyone of the team and everything we’ve achieved.

“Reds, your love and support made it even more special — can’t thank you all enough. God guided every step of this journey, and I’m beyond grateful. We did this together.”

Cody Gakpo backed to retain place at new-look Liverpool

Gakpo’s stock at Anfield has risen exponentially this season after his output of goals and assists has risen exponentually, but he’s set to face even more competition for a place in Slot’s XI after the summer.

Liverpool have several wingers on their radar ahead of the transfer window such as Anthony Gordon, and ex-Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle could be forced to sell Gordon as interest looms from the Reds and Arsenal.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson also told Football Insider that a potential move for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers would be “the deal of the summer”, but with Gakpo in the form he’s shown this season, it’s arguable Slot already has exactly what he needs.
