Jordan Pickford rages at Idrissa Gueye v Chelsea, David Moyes ‘will be furious’

Everton were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and Jordan Pickford was not happy with his teammates over the way they conceded that goal.

David Moyes had feared getting the club relegated from the Premier League when he returned to Goodison Park to replace Sean Dyche as manager back in January.

But an excellent run of form under the Scot means the Toffees are now guaranteed to be playing top-flight football again next season.

Despite that, there were still frustrations for Everton as they fell behind against Chelsea as they travelled to Stamford Bridge on Saturday (26 April).

Jordan Pickford fumes over Nicolas Jackson opener

Pickford’s saves were not enough to prevent Everton losing late to Man City last time out, and it was a similar story in the first half against Enzo Maresca’s side.

After the England international had produced a good save to keep out Noni Madueke, Chelsea would take the lead 27 minutes into the game through Nicolas Jackson.

That came after Pickford had played a pass to Beto on the half-way line, only for the Toffees forward to be dispossessed by Trevoh Chalobah.

From there, Enzo Fernandez played the ball into Jackson who then produced an excellent finish on the turn past Pickford to give Chelsea the lead over Everton.

Commentating on the game for TNT Sports, Joe Cole suggested Moyes would have been far from happy about the way his side conceded that opener.

Speaking as a replay of the goal was shown, the former Chelsea midfielder said: “Jordan Pickford, trying to play out, zipped it through the lines.

“He does so well here, Trevoh Chalobah. He nicks it, good defending, early pass. And this is a striker full of confidence because as soon as it comes to him, left foot, opens it out, he knows he’s going across him.

“Look at the technique there, bang, it skids of this ground, Pickford no chance. I mean, from David Moyes’ perspective he’ll be furious, but fantastic for Chelsea.”

Pickford was then shown angrily remonstrating with Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, holding up four fingers to his teammate.

That prompted commentator Darren Fletcher to note: “Four times he’s saying to Idrissa Gueye that they’ve given the ball away in that kind of situation.”

Everton star right to fume over Chelsea goal

Football Insider Verdict

Of course, the pressure is largely off Moyes‘ side with the target of avoiding relegation for this season having now been achieved.

Even so Everton will still want to end the season on a high in order to maintain momentum going into next season, in a new stadium.

As a result, there will be a annoyance that they are not giving themselves the chance to do that, by conceding goals in this manner.

For Pickford it will be particularly frustrating, given how often he has come to his side’s rescue with some brilliant saves, only for errors from his teammates to cost them anyway.

If Everton are to take another step forward as they will be aiming to do in the 2025/26 campaign, those issues are something they will surely be desperate to cut out of their game.

With Pickford between the posts, they will at least know they will have a goalkeeper who will stay on the case of his defence as they look to make those improvements.
