‘Jose Mourinho is a great charmer but not the Newcastle saviour – I should know’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Jose Mourinho would not be the right fit for Newcastle.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the legendary Portuguese boss loves “tinkering around the edges”, whereas the Magpies need “stability”.

According to The Guardian (8 November), Mourinho is targeting the manager’s job at Newcastle if Eddie Howe leaves St James’ Park.

The 61-year-old has made clear his unhappiness with Turkish club Fenerbahce, while Howe has been at the centre of a rift with newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Mourinho has previously managed Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham in the Premier League.

Newcastle sit eighth in the English top flight after two wins in recent weeks against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Mourinho is not the next ‘Geordie saviour’ at Newcastle, says Wyness

When asked if Mourinho taking over at St James’ Park is a possibility, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I hope not.

“Jose is brilliant at talking himself up and then talking himself out of jobs to get a payoff over the years.

“He’s a charming gentleman, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a few times – but I don’t see him fitting Newcastle very well at the moment.

“Eddie Howe is doing very well, they’ve got to support him because he can take the club forward again.

“They’ve got a good setup. They need stability, but Jose loves tinkering around the edges and creating mayhem.

“I don’t think he can be the next Geordie saviour.”
