Josh Feeney gets green light to agree Aston Villa move – sources

Aston Villa have decided to loan out defender Josh Feeney again next season, sources have told Football Insider.

Feeney is currently on loan at Real Union after joining the Spanish third-tier side in the January transfer window.

Villa are now planning to send the 19-year-old out temporarily again next season on the back of his stint with the Basque club.

Villa Park chiefs are looking for the next stage of the centre-back’s development to be playing more regular first-team football.

Josh Feeney set for another spell away from Aston Villa

Feeney has benefitted this season from the growing relationship between Villa and Real Union, who Unai Emery owns a majority stake in.

V Sports, the Villans’ owners, also signed an agreement with the Spanish club last year to collaborate with them moving forward, leading to Feeney and fellow academy product Tommi O’Reilly making the switch on loan in January.

The pair are likely to have been recommended to the club by former U-21 coach Inigo Idiakez, who left Villa in December to become Real Union manager.

Feeney would perhaps have been hoping to play more minutes for the Basque side after starting in just two of his five appearances.

They have also been on a pretty poor run since he made the move, having won just two of their 14 matches since the beginning of February.

Villa are now looking to loan the England youth international out to a club that will hand him more first-team opportunities next season.

They see the defender as a promising player for the future after handing him a long-term contract at Villa Park last summer.
