‘Josh Windass already dealt Wrexham setback as record-breaking move beckons’

Wrexham are flexing their financial muscles in the transfer market once more as the Red Dragons plot a swoop for Nathan Broadhead.

Broadhead scored just two goals in 18 Premier League appearances at Ipswich Town last season, but the attacker has previously shown his class in the Championship.

Meanwhile, the Red Dragons are adding players to their ranks who can help them succeed in the second tier after winning promotion from League One.

Amid their efforts to launch another promotion bid, Wrexham have signed Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday.

Windass set to serve as Wrexham backup option amid Broadhead news

Wrexham have already strengthened their frontline this summer by signing attacking midfielder Windass, as well as former Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie.

Windass notched 13 goals in 44 Championship appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last term, while Hardie scored 10 goals in 37 second-tier outings for Plymouth.

But Phil Parkinson still wants to add more quality to his attacking ranks, as BBC Sport reported on Wednesday, 30 July, that the Racecourse Ground side are in talks with Ipswich Town to sign Broadhead for a club-record fee of £7.5million.

That lofty sum proves that Wrexham want the 27-year-old to play a star role for them in the Championship.

The former Everton man can operate as a winger, attacking midfielder, or a striker.

However, Parkinson utilises a wing-back system, whereas Broadhead is unlikely to start up front over the likes of Hardie and Sam Smith.

Therefore, summer signing Windass, who plays in the number 10 role, is already set to be demoted to Parkinson’s second choice.

Wrexham have already raised eyebrows by earning three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship, and their transfer activity proves that they now have their sights set on reaching the Premier League.

The Red Dragons recently signed Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest, who has previously proven his worth in the second tier for the East Midlands side, as well as clubs such as Swansea City, Middlesbrough, and Huddersfield Town.

Meanwhile, Broadhead’s Ipswich career shows that he also has what it takes to fire Wrexham towards the upper echelons of the Championship.

The former Wigan Athletic and Sunderland man helped the Tractor Boys clinch back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League under the impressive stewardship of Kieran McKenna.

Broadhead played a key role as the Suffolk side won promotion from the Championship in 2023/24, scoring 13 goals in 38 second-tier appearances.

If the 27-year-old can emulate that kind of form in Wrexham colours, he will be a major threat at the Racecourse Ground.
