Journalist: Celtic eye up loan swoop for top-six side fringe figure in complex deal
Celtic are looking to snap up Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on loan despite him currently being at Spanish side Getafe, according to a journalist.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon has claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Hoops are seeking out a temporary deal for the 25-year-old shot stopper, but that the deal could prove to be complex as a result of the potential transfer departure of Vincent Guaita from the La Liga Club to Crystal Palace.
Martinez is currently the second choice at Getafe, with just four appearances across all competitions, sitting as an unused substitute behind Guaita for the other 19 games this season.
The Hoops may well be looking to secure a late goalkeeper swoop after first choice stopper Craig Gordon was confirmed to have been ruled out of action for three months through injury, with Dorus de Vries set to take his place in the starting XI.
He has made just 13 appearances for Arsenal, currently sitting sixth in the Premier League table, and has had loan spells with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday in recent years.
Football Insider verdict
Brendan Rodgers knows that a new goalkeeper must be a priority with Wednesday’s transfer deadline looming but a move for Martinez seems pretty unlikely at this stage. Getafe are going to be reluctant to let him depart while there are doubts over Guaita’s future, and the Arsenal man will be stepping into the starting XI if his goalkeeping counterpart does leave. Still, if Arsenal want to guarantee Martinez first team football, then sending him to Parkhead, with Gordon out of action long-term, seems a sensible move, and maybe Arsene Wenger will overrule the Spanish side in bringing his man back to send him out again.
