Julian Alvarez decides his next club amid Liverpool and Arsenal interest

Julian Alvarez is set to prioritise a move to Barcelona over Liverpool or Arsenal this summer if he does push for a move away from Atletico Madrid.

Alvarez has been linked with a move to either Liverpool or Arsenal in the last few months, but he is set to prefer to remain in Spain with Barca rather than move back to the Premier League.

The Argentina international is a regular starter for Atleti in La Liga and Champions League matches, with 13 goals and seven assists in 38 appearances so far this season.

He scored 36 goals in 103 games for Man City between 2022 and 2024, but left for the Spanish capital for more game time and due to a dislike of the English weather.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, he is not planning on a return to the Premier League anytime soon with either Liverpool or Arsenal.

Julian Alvarez set to prefer a move to Barcelona instead of the Premier League

Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this season, as they rival Real Madrid to win La Liga and Atletico trail 13 points behind in fourth place.

The 26-year-old has reportedly been offered a new contract by Atleti, with his current one set to expire in 2030, but he may snub the deal to move to the Camp Nou this summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “If Alvarez was to leave Atletico, I think he probably would have a preference for a move to Barcelona, but the big concern over that one is could Barcelona afford a deal for the Argentine?

“There will be widespread interest in Alvarez if there is any indication that he could leave. He’s such a consistent player, such a good goalscorer as well.”

Liverpool could let Cody Gakpo leave if a new winger is signed

While Alvarez could possibly arrive at Anfield if he has a change of heart this summer, Gakpo may well be on his way out of the club after a poor campaign.

He has scored seven goals in 34 appearances across all competitions in 2025-26, with Bayern Munich’s interest in his services fading after they eyed a move last summer and signed his former teammate, Luis Diaz.

Sources have now told Football Insider that the Reds could sell Gakpo ahead of next term if they are able to sign a new left-winger, amid continued links to Anthony Gordon.
