Junior Firpo sends ‘one of your own’ message to Real Betis amid Leeds exit links

Leeds United star Junior Firpo sent an emotional message to Real Betis ahead of the Europa League Conference final.

The 28-year-old is currently in talks over a new deal at Elland Road, with his current contract set to expire at the end of June following four campaigns with the Whites.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Leeds have concerns over Firpoโ€™s ability at the very top level, even despite the full-back notching four goals and 10 assists in the Championship this season.

He was an integral part of Daniel Farkeโ€˜s side winning automatic promotion, and the Championship title, back to the Premier League following two seasons in the second tier of English football.

While the club remains in talks with Firpo, he continues to be heavily linked with a return to Real Betis in La Liga, where he began his career, and his latest post will do nothing but fuel the rumours at Elland Road.

Taking to Instagram stories (28 May), Firpo wrote: โ€œToday is your day, Betis, I will be cheering like one of your own. For all my former teammates, friends, and people I care about in this club.โ€

Betis are set to face Chelsea in the Europa League Conference final on Wednesday, 28 May, having finished sixth in the La Liga table, hoping to cap off a tremendous campaign in Europe.

Football Insider verdict

While some supporters are concerned about Firpoโ€™s abilities in the Premier League, he has certainly shown enough this season to warrant a new contract at Elland Road.

It is impossible to say how the 28-year-old will deal with the leap from the Championship again, but after maturing over the last couple of years, he could still make an important impact for the Whites.

Farkeโ€™s recruitment will be vital to Leedsโ€™ survival next season, but with Joe Rodon, Ao Tanaka, Dan James, and Jayden Bogle in the squad, there is already Premier League talent available.

Football Insider understands that Leeds are weighing up a contract offer for Callum Wilson, though they face plenty of competition from clubs in the top division for the Newcastle United star.

The Whites are likely to have ยฃ150million available for the summer transfer window, Football Insider also understands, so there should be plenty of exciting deals to be made at Elland Road.
