Jurgen Klopp claim rubbished as Whelan issues emphatic Liverpool claim

Noel Whelan has shot down Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and insisted Sunday’s clash with Manchester City will decide who wins the Premier League this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested the title race would be as good as over if either team comes away with the victory.

As quoted by ESPN on Thursday (7 April), Klopp claimed Sunday’s showdown will not determine the title winner and suggested “nobody would think” that was the case.

The Reds currently sit one point behind City with eight games to play.

Whelan insisted the German manager is firmly in the minority with his assessment of Sunday’s clash at the Etihad.

“He’s probably the only person that thinks that,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“I think if it goes to Man City and they’re four points ahead, the title’s over. If Liverpool, we’ve seen teams can go unbeaten for a long time when they’re under pressure.

“They’ve got the mental capabilities to win every single game and the quality to go with it. I believe in my heart that whoever comes out on top on this one (wins the title).

“If it’s a draw then it’s still wide open. If Man City go and win this game, four points, for me, is too big for Liverpool.

“I don’t see Manchester City spilling four points or losing two games. The same for Liverpool, even though they both have got tough fixtures.

“You see the way both teams have played this season, they’re a gulf ahead of everybody else.”

The two sides played out a 2-2 draw in their last league meeting.

They will also face off in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month.
