Jurgen Klopp praised the performance of Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic against Derby.

The 20-year-old made his first competitive start for the Merseyside club and helped them cruise to a 3-0 victory in the EFL Cup third-round tie.

Goals from Ragnar Klavan, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi secured Liverpool’s passage through to the next round of the competition.

Gruijic’s only other appearance came from the substitutes bench against Burnley in the Premier League earlier in the season.

Liverpool manager Klopp hailed the influence of the youngster after he completed the full 90 minutes.

“Marko had a wonderful debut – really good. He is a wonderfully skilled player,” he told the Echo. “If the defensive skills had the same quality as the offensive skills then he is an outstanding place, but we are working on it and he is working on it.”

Grujic is hoping to secure himself a regular position in the senior team after he joined the club in the summer.

The central midfielder moved from Red Star Belgrade, where he scored six goals and supplied seven assists in just 41 appearances.

Klopp is blessed with several talented midfielder at his disposal already, with Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Georginio WIjnaldum all starting the campaign in good form.

Liverpool will find out their last 16 opponents in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night and Grujic will hope to feature in the upcoming fixtures.
