Jurgen Klopp has ‘touched a nerve’ with Liverpool fans – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Jurgen Klopp’s new job at Red Bull will “touch a raw nerve” with Liverpool fans.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Reds supporters will have to “avert their eyes” but are still likely to forgive the legendary German.
Red Bull confirmed last week (9 October) that Klopp will take on a new role as Head of Global Soccer starting in January 2025 after leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
The energy drink giant own several clubs across the globe and also hold a minority stake at Leeds United.
Klopp has previously spoken out against the multi-club model in 2017, saying: “I’m a football romantic and I like tradition in football and all that stuff. In Germany, only two clubs sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the game – and that is Mainz and Dortmund.”
He has faced harsh criticism in Germany, where RB Leipzig are referred to as the “most hated club in football”.
Liverpool fans will have to ‘avert their eyes’ after Klopp move
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s touching a bit of a raw nerve for Liverpool fans, I think.
“They’re not going to say a bad word about Jurgen, there’s a huge reservoir of love for him.
“But they will have to swallow hard with him going into Red Bull.
“He has said he never wants to be part of a multi-club organisation, he doesn’t like it – he doesn’t want Liverpool near it.
“But here he is at one of the biggest multi-club organisations in the world.
“He’s now having to deal with the capitalists at Red Bull.

“There will be areas where Liverpool fans have to avert their eyes and just remember the good days with Jurgen.
“There’s a lot of love for him and they will forgive him.”
