Jurgen Klopp wanted Man United flop to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp discussed the possibility of signing then-Ajax winger Antony to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, according to a report from The Times.

The Reds attacker last extended his contract at Anfield in the summer of 2022 when he put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the current 2024/25 season, with another new deal now on the agenda.

At the time he signed his most recent contract with the club the winger had just a year remaining on his deal on Merseyside and his German manager was eyeing alternatives.

As a result, this report from The Times states that Klopp considered a move for Antony as a replacement for the Egyptian if he had moved on which was seen as a possibility.

In the end though Salah would sign his new deal with Liverpool, while the Brazilian headed to Man United during that same summer for a reported £85million [Sky Sports].

Liverpool will be glad they let Man United sign Antony

The fact things worked out in this way will undoubtedly be a huge relief to those associated with the red half of Merseyside.

Salah has continued to shine since he signed that new contract at Anfield, and remains vital to the club’s hopes of winning major trophies.

Man United Antony
Antony has struggled at Man United but could have ended up at Liverpool.

By contrast, the expensive signing of Antony by Erik ten Hag has been a largely dismal one for Man United.

The winger has struggled to score goals or provide assists on any sort of consistent basis since his move to Old Trafford.

Indeed, it seems as though his time with the Red Devils could already be coming to an end, with potential replacements identified.

Of course, there is no guarantee things would have played out in the same way had he moved to Liverpool instead.

Even so, there is a chance this would have been their expensive mistake, rather than Man United’s.

With that in mind the decision to give Salah a new contract now looks to have generated another positive for Liverpool.
