Everton fans called for Sam Allardyce to be sacked as he addressed the media for the first time since reports that the club intend to dump him and appoint Shakhtar Donetsk’s Paulo Fonseca as the new manager.
The Mirror claimed this week that Allardyce and director of football Steve Walsh are likely to be axed and replaced by Fonseca and PSV Eindhoven’s recruitment chief Marcelo Brands.
Allardyce was appointed manager last November on a contract that runs until the summer of 2019 but has struggled to convince the Everton faithful despite steering the team to safety.
The Merseysiders are ninth in the Premier League and have 40 points after fears earlier in the season they could be drawn into a relegation battle.
Everton supporters are unhappy at the team’s style of football and their failure to reap the dividends of vast investment in the playing squad under majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri in the last two years.
Allardyce addressed the media at a briefing on Friday morning, commenting on team news and how weekend opponents Manchester City have benefitted from £350million of investment.
But supporters’ main concern was not preparations for the clash against City but the manager’s future.
