Kalvin Phillips has stated on Twitter that it is time for Alex Mowatt to “rip up the Championship” after he made a switch from Leeds to Barnsley, although Leeds fans won’t be in agreement.

Barnsley are play-off rivals and are currently in eighth spot, ten points behind Leeds in third.

Leeds confirmed on its official website on Friday afternoon that the 21-year-old has made a permanent transfer to their Yorkshire rivals.

A product of the Leeds academy, Mowatt has struggled to cement a regular place in Garry Monk’s promotion chasing team this season as he makes a move to secure first-team football.

Phillips, who was his fellow midfield partner and academy product, had this to say about Mowatt after his move as posted on his personal Twitter account.

“All the best to Alex Mowatt,” said Phillips. “Time for you to rip up the Championship.”

Mowatt played 20 games in all competitions for Monk’s side this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

However, he only started eight of those matches as he now leaves a team he joined as a nine-year-old in 2003.

Doncaster-born Mowatt will now be looking to play his part in a team that was recently promoted from League One and is doing well under the stewardship of Paul Heckingbottom this term.

They are five points off the play-off places, but they did recently sell two of their best players.

Playmaker Conor Hourihane and right-back James Bree, both made a permanent transfers to Championship rivals Aston Villa.

But, along with Mowatt, the Tykes also added Leicester City midfielder Matty James on loan until the end of the season.
