Kalvin Phillips: Leeds set to fix ‘big problem’ after ‘massive’ update – pundit

Leeds United could solve their “big problem” when Kalvin Phillips returns to the starting XI, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the midfielder’s comeback may transform the Whites’ fortunes.

As quoted by Leeds Live (18 February), manager Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Phillips, 26, is on track to return in March – and insisted that his situation has “not changed” from the original 12-week prognosis.

The England international has been missing since 5 December – with the Whites conceding an average of three league goals a game after that date.

Hutton suggested Leeds United can’t expect to win games if that defensive record continues.

When asked about the prospect of Phillips’ return, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “He makes their starting eleven much better.

“I don’t think they’re far off, and if they can bring back a couple of players from injury then that’ll be a massive help.

“Sometimes when you’re down the bottom of the league, you start to feel that pressure. They had a chance to build a gap against Everton, and I think the pressure just got to them.

“They score goals, but they concede them as well. Every team knows that there’s always going to be opportunities when you play Leeds.

“It’s a big problem and something they’ve got to look at and try and improve, and possibly Phillips could be a part of that. You can’t keep conceding all these goals and expect to win games.”

Leeds United face fierce rivals Man United at Elland Road tomorrow (20 February).
