Kalvin Phillips set to miss World Cup after Man City latest - pundit

Kevin Campbell has claimed “there is no way” Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be included in the England squad for the World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the 26-year-old will not “be able to play enough football” prior to the tournament.

According to The Athletic‘s Sam Lee (18 September), Phillips is set to undergo an operation on a shoulder injury that has plagued him this year.

The centre-midfielder will have nine weeks to recover prior to England’s World Cup opener against Iran (21 November).

Campbell claimed the wellbeing of the player has to be at the forefront of everyone’s thinking.

“He is not going to make it,” he told Football Insider.

“If his shoulder keeps popping out he is going to have to get it pinned.

“There is no way back for him before the World Cup. He is not going to be able to play enough football beforehand.

“It is a shame but the health of the player must come first. Manchester City need to get him right because they have just spent a lot of money on him.

“He has been in and around the squad but he has not really had an impact. If he gets his shoulder sorted out he could play a key role in the second half of the season.

“I think it is really important that he gets it sorted out.”
