Kalvin Phillips to make sensational Leeds return? O’Rourke shares update

Leeds United are not expected to re-sign Kalvin Phillips despite his difficulties at Ipswich Town, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the midfielder is currently focused on “getting regular game time.”

It has been a difficult two years for the Man City midfielder, who has struggled to find the form he once had while at Leeds.

The England international is currently on loan at Ipswich after being deemed surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola, despite the injury problems that defending Premier League champions have been handed this season.

However, Phillips has struggled to adjust to life at Portman Road and Football Insider revealed that Ipswich chiefs are not impressed with his condition.

There is a belief that his head is still at Elland Road and that Phillips would like a return to Leeds, while there have been claims his condition is nowhere near the level of a top Premier League star.

Kalvin Phillips is unlikely to return to Leeds United

Phillips burst onto the scene under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, where he made 234 appearances which led to him breaking into Gareth Southgate’s England team.

However, he is not expected to be returning to Elland Road as Ipswich will need Phillips’s Premier League experience throughout the season as they fight for survival.

Kieran McKenna has made it clear there is no chance of the defensive midfielder departing the club therefore his loan move ending is unlikely.

Phillips’ long-term future remains unclear as he has struggled to make a mark at the Etihad Stadium since he joined City, but he is under contract with the club until 2028.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United but was unable to rediscover his past form and he only made 10 appearances.
