Mousa Dembele has emerged as a key Tottenham player

By Amir Mir

Graham Roberts believes Mousa Dembele has been the best player in a Tottenham shirt this season followed by Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen.

The club legend left out attacking duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli, who have scored the bulk of the club’s goals this term.

Roberts lauded the likes of Alli, Victor Wanyama, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose for their performances, but it was the midfield powerhouse Dembele, who got the nod.

He also stated that had striker Kane played more games during his injury-hit season then he would have been his other choice.

However, he stuck with Belgium international Dembele, who has dominated the middle of the park throughout the season.

“I think I would just go for Dembele [as player of the season],” Roberts wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Eriksen and Jan close behind but the whole side has been superb.”

Over the course of the season, Dembele has played 35 matches in all competitions for his title-chasing team, scoring one goal and supplying two assists.

Added to that, he has helped Spurs secure 16 clean sheets during those matches as his brute strength and ability to drive forward with the ball has been a big factor behind his success.

For the majority of the campaign, Dembele has partnered summer signing Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park, with the likes of Eric Dier and Harry Winks also playing that deep lying playmaker role.

Dembele will now focus his attention to taking on West Ham on Friday evening where Spurs will be hoping to reduce the gap to leaders Chelsea to one point.
