Kasper Schmeichel: Celtic accelerate replacement search as new goalkeeper eyed

Kasper Schmeichel is likely to be replaced by Celtic in the summer transfer window as they step up their transfer plans, sources have told Football Insider.

The 39-year-old has endured a miserable season between the sticks and missed the last five Scottish Premiership games through a shoulder injury.

His contract at Parkhead is set to expire at the end of the season and any plans to extend his stay have been cooled, with the search for a replacement underway.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Celtic are already eyeing a number of potential replacements for Schmeichel.

Ahead of what could be a crucial transfer window for Celtic, the recruitment team is working to identify targets as they aim to accelerate their plans.

Celtic prepare for Kasper Schmeichel to leave Parkhead

Former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Schmeichel has played his last game for Celtic and potentially in his career due to his recent injury.

The severity of the blow means he is highly unlikely to return before the end of the season, further adding to the club’s urgency to land a replacement quickly.

The Denmark international’s declining performances, and ongoing questions about Viljami Sinisalo, have pushed Celtic to be active in the transfer market.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Celtic are probably going to need to strengthen that goalkeeping department with Kasper Schmeichel out long term.

“His future is still very much up in the air with his contract running down.

“Sinisalo’s done okay since he’s come into the team as well, but Celtic will be looking to definitely strengthen that goalkeeping department when the summer window opens.

“There are a few options they’ve been looking at to strengthen in that position and they know they will have to step up their efforts.”

Which goalkeepers are on Celtic’s radar?

Celtic are desperate to add further quality to their goalkeeping department ahead of next season and are assessing a number of targets as a result.

Football Insider revealed on 6 April that Celtic like Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken and believe he could be a good option to become their first-choice shot-stopper.

It is understood that the 25-year-old is one of multiple players who the Hoops have been watcing closely this season ahead of the summer transfer window.

McCracken is out of contract at Dens Park at the end of the campaign, and could potentially be available without the need for a transfer fee.

However, his availability has placed a number of clubs on alert, with English sides also keeping a close eye ahead of the summer window.
