Kasper Schmeichel sends message to Celtic fans after ‘cruel’ Bayern defeat

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel took to social media to address the fans after being knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich on Tuesday (February 18).

The 38-year-old played the full 90 minutes as the Scottish champions were denied a place in the last 16 of the Champions League by an added-time Bayern equaliser.

Winger Nicolas Kuhn opened the scoring for Celtic in the 63rd minute, capitalising on a defensive mishap to make it 1-1 on aggregate at the Allianz Arena.

Brendan Rodger’s side looked set to take the German giants to extra time until full-back Alphonso Davies scored an equaliser in added time, sending the Bundesliga leaders through.

There was controversy in the build-up to Davies’ goal though, as Celtic had originally been on the attack when forward Daizen Maeda appeared to be fouled.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Keith Wyness has said that Celtic are set to miss out on an ‘enormous’ £15million payday after being knocked out of Europe’s elite club competition.

Schmeichel took to Instagram after the game to address the fans, saying: “Fought for everything last night—it just wasn’t to be. Football can be cruel sometimes, but I’m very proud of the boys and honored to wear the shirt. Thank you for the incredible support, as always.”

Celtic can now focus on securing a fourth consecutive Scottish Premier League title as they prepare to face Hibernian on Saturday (February 22).
