Kasper Schmeichel sends three-word message to Celtic fans after confirmed news

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel took to social media to celebrate their 1-0 Champions League win over Young Boys on Wednesday (January 22).

The 38-year-old played a crucial part in Celtic’s win over the Swiss side, ending the game having made four saves, eight recoveries, a 91 per cent pass accuracy rate, and pulling off a remarkable double save in the 62nd minute.

Kyogo Furuhashi thought he opened the scoring in the sixth minute but his strike was correctly chalked off by the linesman for offside.

The Japanese striker then had a second goal ruled out just after the half-hour mark but captain Callum McGregor was judged to have fouled a Young Boys player in the build-up.

Kyogo’s bad luck continued, having a third goal ruled out just two minutes later, once again for offside, before Arne Engels had the opportunity to put his side ahead from the penalty spot following a foul on Greg Taylor, which he subsequently missed.

Celtic’s dominance finally paid off in the 86th minute, taking the lead through a Loris Benito own goal, and moving into 18th, level on points with Juventus and Real Madrid in the new league phase with 12.

Kasper Schmeichel proving his worth as Celtic take a big step towards Champions League knockouts

The veteran shot-stopper has been integral to Brendan Rodgers’ plans so far this season, starting all 35 of his games across all competitions, conceding 28 goals, and keeping 21 clean sheets in his 3180 minutes of action.

Schmeichel has since had his contract at the Scottish champions extended by a year, with his previous deal set to expire at the end of this season.

The Denmark international took to Instagram after the game to commemorate both the win and his new deal, saying: “What a night.”

Rodger’s side look set to secure Champions League knock-out football for the first time since 2012-13, in which they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Juventus.

Celtic’s attention will return to domestic affairs on Saturday (January 25) as they host Dundee FC before traveling south of the border for their final Champions League league phase game against Aston Villa four days later.
