Middlesbrough have joined the chase for Aberdeen ace Sam Cosgrove after assistant manager Robbie Keane ran the rule over him in last night’s SPL clash against Rangers, Football Insider can reveal.
Keane was in attendance at Aberdeen’s 2-2 draw with Steven Gerrard’s side at Pittodrie for a transfer mission to closely assess target man Cosgrove.
A Middlesbrough source has told Football Insider that the club are keeping close tabs on the striker as they plot a move to sign him ahead of the January transfer window.
The north-east club face competition for Cosgrove from the likes of Stoke City and Lazio.
Middlesbrough are considering a move for the former Carlisle man as they look to strengthen their attack and climb clear of relegation in the Championship.
Cosgrove has enjoyed another fine season to date for Aberdeen with 18 goals from 23 matches in all competitions, including nine from 15 SPL games.
Boro are the lowest scorers in the Championship this season with just 16 goals from their opening 19 games.
Cosgrove, who is valued well in excess of £1million, is on a list of strikers they are actively monitoring.
The 6ft 3in colossus signed an Aberdeen contract in January that runs until the summer of 2022.
Republic of Ireland legend Keane is manager Jonathan Woodgate’s number two at the Riverside Stadium.
The pair took over the reins of the Championship big guns in the summer but progress is fitful and the team are 20th in the division with just 17 points from 19 fixtures.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have been handed a huge January transfer boost by Premier League club.
