Keith Hackett Exclusive: Blackburn vs Ipswich to be replayed with red card explained

Blackburn and Ipswich’s Championship clash was abandoned in the 80th minute after heavy rain at Ewood Park, despite Rovers leading 1-0.

Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett has exclusively told Football Insider what both sets of fans should expect after the crunch Championship clash was called off.

Sources told Football Insider on 15 September that Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was spotted at West Ham following mounting pressure on Graham Potter.

Frank Lampard is no longer considered for the West Ham job, Football Insider revealed on 19 September, as the Hammers suffered another loss against Crystal Palace.

McKenna and Ipswich look set for another trip to Lancashire, though, with their fans told to keep hold of their tickets for the game, which will likely be replayed.

Blackburn aggrieved by late abandonment against Ipswich after taking the lead

Blackburn hosted the Tractor Boys in the sixth match of the Championship season as Ipswich looked to back up Jaden Philogene’s brilliance against Sheffield United on 12 September by notching another win.

Jacob Greaves received a red card in the 49th minute for a professional foul as the last man, which later led to Todd Cantwell converting from the penalty spot.

Heavy rain then ensued, which culminated in the referee Stephen Martin having no choice but to call off the game in the 80th minute.

Red card will stand as Keith Hackett sympathises with Ipswich Town fans

With the game set to be rescheduled, it is said that Greaves’ red card will stand for that, as Rovers will be frustrated by the denial of three points.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former referee Hackett commended the match officials’ decision and laid out what happens next for fans.

Detailing the next steps for all parties involved, he said: “The game will be rescheduled, so I do hope that Blackburn Rovers fans will be asked to retain their tickets to gain free entry when the game is replayed. This has to be a gesture from the club; it isn’t mandated in the rules.

“The sanction of a red card will be applied when the game is replayed. Wow, what a journey for Ipswich Town fans.

“I’ll be surprised if it is not replayed. The referee for the Blackburn game is one of the most experienced officials on the list.

“He will have tried to ensure that the game could be played. Sadly, the weather has beaten them.”

All eyes are on the EFL as they prepare to replay Blackburn versus Ipswich again.
