Keith Hackett hails ‘terrific’ Madley decision on Sheffield Wednesday incident
Bobby Madley was absolutely right to award Sheffield Wednesday a penalty against Preston North End, according to a delighted Keith Hackett.
The former FIFA referee and PGMOL chief told Football Insider that the official was perfectly positioned to make the decision.
With the visitors leading in the second half at Hillsborough on 7 December Pol Valentin was brought down in the box by Kaine Kesler-Hayden to hand the hosts a route to an equaliser.
But Josh Windass’ kick was poor and Freddie Woodman kept him out to preserve the one-goal lead.
Wednesday would go onto level the scores in the 76th minute through Michael Smith as Woodman went from hero to zero with an error.

The decision for Madley to point to the spot was a relatively straight-forward one but former Premier League official Hackett was very pleased that the referee was in exactly the right place at the right time to get it right.
He told Football Insider: “Referee Madley was in a terrific position to award a penalty kick to Wednesday.
“Wednesday’s Josh Windass steps up and gives an easy chance for PNE goalkeeper to save.
“Preston lead 1-0”.
Wednesday couldn’t ultimately find a winner and Danny Rohl was forced to be content with a point after the 1-1 result, as his side failed to close the gap on the Championship play-off places.
In other news, Hackett was much less impressed with Madley’s brother Andy for what he did this week.
