Keith Hackett hits out as Andre Onana footage from Man United-Wolves analysed

Andre Onana and his fellow goalkeepers will have to learn to “overcome” the pressure they are coming under after Man United were beaten at Wolves on Boxing Day, Keith Hackett has said.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the trend of positioning players to put goalkeepers under pressure from set-pieces is becoming “standard practice”.

Ruben Amorim’s side travelled to Molineux on Boxing Day looking to improve on a return of one win and three defeats from their last four Premier League games.

However a 2-0 defeat to a relegation-threatened Wolves will only have served to pile yet more misery on Man United.

Now, Hackett has suggested they can have few complaints about one key moment in how that defeat came about.

Andre Onana failed in protestations after Man United concede straight from a corner again

After Bruno Fernandes was sent off early in the second-half of the game, it was Wolves who took the lead just before the hour-mark.

That came when Matheus Cunha – still awaiting confirmation of the length of his ban after his outburst against Ipswich – scored directly from a corner.

Following their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday (22 December) this was the second straight game in which Man United conceded in such a way.

In the wake of this latest goal, Onana was seen protesting unsuccessfully against the award of the goal, after Matt Doherty was seen to be pressuring the goalkeeper, preventing him from reaching the ball.

Hackett has now suggested that is simply something that shot-stoppers such as the Red Devils man will simply have to learn to live with going forward.

Speaking about the Man United complaints about the goal, the former referee told Football Insider:

“Onana, like all goalkeepers, are coming under pressure at corner kicks. Carefully orchestrated blocking using a player in front of and behind the goalkeeper is now standard practice.

“Wolves opened the scoring with the goalkeeper protesting. Goalkeepers need to seriously think how they can overcome this what has now become standard practice.”

Following that defeat at Molineux, Man United have now dropped to 14th in the Premier League table, ahead of their clash with Newcastle on Monday (30 December).

With Onana having already been criticised for some costly errors this season, this now looks to be another issue for the goalkeeper to worry about.

In other news, Man United staff have been left shocked by the latest decision from INEOS.
