Keith Hackett: Police will be involved after Tyrese Campbell incident in Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United

Tyrese Campbell is set to be at the centre of a police investigation following a moment that took place during Sheffield United’s 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the surveillance cameras inside Hillsborough will be consulted after the incident.

Campbell netted in the early stages of both halves to help his team to three points, and lift them to within touching distance of escaping the Championship drop zone.

The striker’s goals handed Sheffield Wednesday another defeat, which has kept them rooted to the foot of the table in the second tier as their struggles continue both on and off the pitch.

The former Stoke City forward stole the show at Hillsborough, but he was at the centre of some unsavoury scenes during the contest, which are now set to be taken further.

Hackett criticises Sheffield Wednesday stewards after objects thrown at Campbell

Sheffield Wednesday’s off-field situation has been dire of late, and they were dealt yet more pain by their bitter rivals this weekend.

Campbell’s influence ultimately decided the game, as his fourth and fifth goals of the season put the contest beyond the hosts’ reach in the Steel City Derby.

He struck the opener in front of the Kop at Hillsborough in the 11th minute of the action, and the Sky Sports cameras captured a series of objects being thrown by home supporters while he was celebrating the goal.

Hackett was critical of the lack of invlolvement from the stewards in the incident, and expects it to be eascalated by the authorities in the coming days.

“The throwing of objects must be treated very seriously,” he exclusively told Football Insider.

“The police have surveillance cameras and they will be looking to identify the culprit who may then face a criminal prosecution. I am disappointed that stewards have not moved to the area from where the object was thrown to prevent a repeat.”

Wednesday were investigated for a similar incident in 2019

Tensions always run high in clashes between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, but unfortunately, this isn’t the first time an incident like this has occurred at Hillsborough in recent years.

Ex-Blades centre-back Jack O’Connell was targeted with coins and a plastic bottle during a derby at Hillsborough back in 2019, with the incident investigated by the FA at the time, according to talkSPORT.

Given that several of the objects thrown during Sunday’s incidents were captured by the TV cameras at the ground, it would be a huge surprise if a similar situation doesn’t unfold in the aftermath of the contest.
