Keith Hackett sends message to Howard Webb after what he saw in Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth

Jarred Gillett must be used solely as a referee following his near-perfect performance during the draw between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that Howard Webb has one of his “top three” referees in Gillett after his display at Selhurst Park.

Red flags have been raised over Chris Kavanagh multiple times this season, but the Premier League has multiple highly talented officials who take to the pitch each week.

While Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola were stuck in a war of tactics, Hackett was far more focused on the brilliant job that the referee managed during a six-goal thriller on Saturday, 18 October.

Jean-Philippe Mateta netted a hat-trick during the 3-3 draw at Selhurst Park, the third of which he scored from the penalty spot after Marc Guehi was dragged over in the box by Bafode Diakite.

Of course, the Cherries were stunned by the decision, but even after a quick review from VAR, the penalty stood and Palace were able to steal a point in the seventh minute of added time.

The Frenchman even had the chance to score the winner shortly after Bournemouth kicked off again, but blazed his effort far over the crossbar.

Once again, despite all the ongoing drama between the two sides, Hackett was keen to mention the performance from the man in the middle and sent a clear message to the head of the PGMOL.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “I thought it was superbly refereed. Jarred Gillett gave the performance of the season to date. He’s had some good games this season and the back-end of last term.

“At this moment in time, he’s certainly sitting in my top three. If I were Howard Webb, Gillett would be refereeing every week, along with Taylor and Oliver. Let’s use our top referees for that.

“Watching Taylor doing the fourth official job, what’s he there for? Let’s treat these guys as the top five referees and use them as that. Gillett is a very good VAR operator, so I can understand why he is chosen.”
