Keith Wyness can’t believe Frank Lampard could accept Rangers offer

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed former Rangers manager target Frank Lampard is unlikely to be tempted by a potential move to Ibrox.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted any manager will want assurances they will be able to invest in the playing squad, which are promises the Gers cannot currently make.

Lampard was previously a managerial target at Rangers in 2023 with Graeme Souness, who was involved in the recruitment process, identifying him as his pick for the role.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder is still out of work after leaving a caretaker role at Stamford Bridge in 2023.

Current Rangers boss Philippe Clement is under pressure at Ibrox with his side trailing Aberdeen and Celtic by nine points at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Lampard won’t be tempted by Rangers job, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Lampard is more likely to end up at English Championship side Coventry.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Lampard’s agent has been busy recently, he’s been linked with a lot of jobs.

“He’s been mentioned at Coventry, that has more chance of happening.

“In terms of Rangers, paying for another top-class manager will be an issue.

“But a bigger issue will be paying for what a new manager will want to invest in the squad.

“With the accounts we’ve seen, Rangers are in a tricky position financially.

“That’s why I believe they’re better off sticking with the footballing team they’ve got right now until the board is fixed and new investment comes in.

“Then they can rebuild in a proper way, rather than putting on band-aids and staggering from crisis to crisis.

“It’s going to carry on until they stop and take a deep breath.”
