Keith Wyness: Celtic want to blow Rangers away & ‘don’t care about the money’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed bragging rights will be the main motivation for Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final, not prize money.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the prize on offer is “peanuts” and claimed the Hoops will be looking at a big victory against Rangers, something which is “worth more than money”.
Celtic will face their Old Firm rivals at Hampden Park on 15 December after dispatching Aberdeen 6-0 in the semi-final last week.
Rangers beat Motherwell to reach the final of the competition they won last year in one of Philippe Clement’s first acts as boss.
Last season’s triumph was the Gers’ first since the 2010-11 season, with Celtic winning the trophy in six of the last seven years before the 2023-24 campaign.
The victor will receive £400,000 in prize money, with the runner-up receiving £200,000.
Scottish League Cup prize money would be ‘peanuts’ for Celtic, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s peanuts in terms of prize money.
“It’s a very small amount.
“This competition is always about bragging rights. If Celtic can repeat the trick and beat Rangers 6-0, that would be what they’re looking for.
“It’s worth more than money for them.”

Celtic are no stranger to big prize money payouts after their success in the Champions League so far this season.
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (6 November) that Brendan Rodgers’ side have already earned more than £31million in prize money from European participation this season.
