Keith Wyness drops ‘shock’ Dyche sack revelation from Everton boardroom

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Everton owners The Friedkin Group (TFG) have not taken the cheap option by replacing Sean Dyche with David Moyes.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed TFG were “shocked” at a boardroom meeting last week after Dyche admitted he had taken the Toffees as far as he could.

Moyes has returned to the Merseysiders, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract at his former club – whom he left for Man United in 2013.

Dyche was sacked as manager at Goodison Park with Everton sitting 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the drop zone.

The 53-year-old has since broken his silence, insisting it was an “honour” to manage the club – but the time was right to leave.

Everton have not taken cheap option with Moyes appointment, says Wyness

Wyness insisted Moyes was seen as the “best option” following TFG’s search for a new boss.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think this change was cost-related.

“The Friedkins won’t have come in and spent the money they have and not taken the best option they believe is available.

“This situation unfolded very quickly last week. There was a meeting, and Dyche told them he felt he had taken the club as far as he could have.

“They were surprised, as they had come to the meeting to support him and freshen up the squad. It was a bit of a shock.

“But they took it as a sign of resignation.

“The payouts were resolved on Wednesday, but not for the full amount – so Dyche may have played his cards wrong in the meeting.

“They then had to announce the decision just three hours before the FA Cup game, which is the first time I’ve seen it so close to a game.

“It’s moved quickly but it’s not cost related. The Friedkins have decided that their best chance at stability is with David Moyes.

“There is only one goal this season – staying up. All the future planning will happen in the summer, but they are not willing to risk this investment.

“Moyes was seen as the best option, so here we are in a new era.”
