Keith Wyness ‘expects’ big Everton decision on sacking Dyche & Thelwell

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he expects incoming owner Dan Friedkin to keep Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell until the end of the season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Friedkin won’t be “frightened of pulling the trigger” but insisted stability will give the Toffees the best chance of staying in the Premier League.

Everton confirmed in a statement (23 September) that the US investor has reached an agreement to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in the club.

Dyche and sporting director Thelwell are out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

The Everton boss has faced sack speculation in recent weeks following the club’s winless start to the Premier League season – which sees them sit 19th in the table.

Dyche and Thelwell ‘deserve chance’ to stay at Everton, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve got to look at what Sean Dyche has done in the last couple of seasons.

“He’s performed above and beyond the resources he’s been given.

“This season, there have been several injuries – but I think it’s still the best bet to stay in the Premier League.

“Dyche and Thelwell deserve the chance to do that.

“Friedkin will be opening his mind to the other managers and sporting directors available, we’ll see how that plays out.

“No doubt they are ambitious, but I think stability is the best chance of staying up.

“They’re not frightened of pulling the trigger as we’ve seen with De Rossi at Roma, but I don’t think that will happen.

“They need time to come in and understand the club, the culture – rather than coming in and shooting from the hip.

“I expect Dyche and Thelwell to stay and we’ll then see how it plays out for next season.”
