Keith Wyness has ‘questions’ for Everton chiefs as stadium concerns revealed

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed he has “always had questions” about the capacity of the club’s state-of-the-art new stadium.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “most people recognise” now that a ground holding in excess of 60,000 spectators would have been “more appropriate”.

Everton are putting the finishing touches on their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, which will hold 52,888 when it opens in 2025.

Architect Dan Meis designed the striking structure, which broke ground in 2021 and is estimated to cost in excess of £750million.

Wyness has previously told Football Insider (16 October) that the stadium’s capacity will preclude it from hosting the Champions League final.

Everton will move into their new home in time for the start of the 2025-26 season.

Wyness has concerns about Everton new stadium capacity

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve always had questions about the capacity that was selected.

“But that’s where we are.

“There are many constraints around the site itself, because it’s in a dock.

“I don’t know enough about the process that Dan Meis, the architect, went through with the club.

“There will have been studies, there will have been a cost factor.

“I think most people recognise that a capacity over 60,000 would have been more appropriate.

“But it’s great to see the progress that has been made. I don’t know if Meis has built in some way to increase capacity in the future.

“We’ll see how it evolves.”
