Keith Wyness hits out at Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart – ‘I don’t like it’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has ripped into Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart for his “complaining” over refereeing controversies.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it was “wrong” for the newly-appointed chief to get involved in the “minutae” and insisted he has “a lot more to worry about” at Ibrox.

Rangers fans were left furious after they were not awarded a spot kick when Vaclav Cerny was brought down in the area by Liam Scales in extra time of the Scottish League Cup final earlier this month (15 December).

The Ibrox club eventually lost the final after a penalty shoot-out following a 3-3 draw.

Stewart started his role the following day, and immediately asked the Scottish FA for an explanation over the failure to award a penalty – a decision they eventually admitted was a mistake.

The VAR team have recently been reinstated to Scottish Premiership appointments and Rangers have released a statement describing that move as impacting “credibility and confidence” in officiating.

Rangers chief Stewart told to ‘get back to his day job’ after refereeing outburst

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I was very disappointed with Patrick Stewart, the new CEO.

“He came in, and on his very first day was complaining to the SFA about a penalty in the cup final.

“For me, as a club executive, you’ve got to get a bigger picture and probably have a word with the league at the end of the season.

“You’ve then got your evidence from across a whole season. I just think it’s wrong to knee-jerk and hit out at referees based on one incident.

“I don’t like seeing CEOs getting involved in that kind of minutiae. He’s got a lot more to worry about, and he should get back to his day job.”
