Keith Wyness in ‘no doubt’ about Everton agreeing Scott McTominay deal

Everton’s hopes of signing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay are slim amid speculation around a return to the Premier League.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen and Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, does not believe McTominay will leave Italy in the near future.

Everton have been linked with a move for McTominay, who has a contract at Napoli until 2028, and has made over 170 Premier League appearances previously at Man United.

McTominay left Man United for Napoli in 2024, and he won the Serie A title in his first season at the Italian club.

Keith Wyness delivers Scott McTominay verdict

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that McTominay’s goal for Scotland against Denmark, which helped his nation to World Cup qualification, has fuelled speculation of a Premier League return.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness is not convinced the 28-year-old will be on the move.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t think so. I think he’s been linked with everybody I’ve seen.

I think there’s been a lot of lazy journalism about, you know, after that great Scottish goal, McTominay is going to be back in the Premier League with every club

I think there was a chance when he left to go to Napoli that Moyes would have wanted him at that sort of time. But I think that ship has sailed.

I think he should stay in Napoli, really. I’d be very surprised to see him back in the Premiership. I’d always felt he was a quality player, and he certainly seems to be happy and playing with a smile on his face now.

“And there’s no doubt he’s a talent, but I don’t see him coming to Everton, so I’m afraid that one to me is just a press story.”

Spurs also in McTominay pursuit

Tottenham have been linked with a move for McTominay, but Napoli would demand a “huge fee” for the midfielder to leave.

McTominay contributed 12 goals and 4 assists from midfield during Napoli’s title-winning season, and he is now testing himself in the Champions League under former Spurs and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

The World Cup next summer may highlight McTominay’s ability further, and more clubs may join the race for his signature.
