Keith Wyness left ‘confused’ by new Everton takeover twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has admitted that John Textor’s latest statement has left him with more questions than answers.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested that Textor has got the “football bug,” despite the confusion about his comments.

Textor revealed a lengthy statement to clarify his situation regarding his pursuit of taking over Everton, but it didn’t provide the clarity that Everton fans hoped for.

The American has entered a period of exclusivity to buy Farhad Mosiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park, but Crystal Palace being one of the four teams Eagle Football Holdings owns shares in has created some hurdles.

His statement claimed that he is trying to buy out his partners at Palace, which has left some people wondering where his true intentions are.

John Textor’s statement hasn’t cleared up the full picture for Everton

Wyness believes that Textor has shown he is keen on being involved with Everton, but there is also an element of confusion due to his comments about Palace.

He told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “It left a few more questions than it answered in funny ways.

“When he was talking about how he had tried to buy out his partners in Palace, did that indicate that he was still interested in really owning the whole of Palace? Could that still be an option?

“Yet he mentioned Everton and his desire to be part of the community, he stressed that pretty heavily and [to] be part of the Everton family.

“It was pretty confusing, to be honest.

“It showed he was keen on both deals, but I am having to sort of second guess because you’re having to read between the lines here that he still seems to be quite interested in the Everton deal.

“It seems as though he’s trying to let down the Palace fans a little bit, but it wasn’t clear and as specific as I’d have liked it to have been.

“Maybe he didn’t quite achieve what he hoped to do in terms of clarifying all the issues.”

“He’s definitely got the football bug, there’s no doubt about it.

“He’s got enough experience now in football that he understands he’s got to keep the fans onside so if anything it’s probably to try and placate both sets of fans.”
