Keith Wyness names Aston Villa’s first summer signing – ‘they’ll make it happen’
Aston Villa signed Marco Asensio in the January transfer window on an initial loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 29-year-old has had an instant impact for Unai Emery’s side, scoring five goals in just seven Villa appearances – including a crucial penalty in the Champions League against Club Brugge.
Villa do not have an option to buy Asensio, who won three Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, at the end of his loan spell in June.
The Spain international is under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until June 2026.
Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on his old club pushing forward with a deal for Asensio this summer.
Asensio will be ‘key target’ for Aston Villa, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he expects Emery and Monchi to make a deal happen this summer.
The left-footer has seamlessly integrated into the Spaniard’s system at Villa Park since arriving on loan – alongside fellow January signings Donyell Malen, Marcus Rashford, Andres Garcia and Axel Disasi.

Wyness acknowledged Villa will be “tight” on Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) but expects them to land Asensio regardless.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they’ll push ahead and sign him, Emery has been a huge fan for many years.
“I’ve followed his career myself, I think back to when he was at Real Mallorca – that’s when he came to prominence in my mind anyway.
“He’s a talent, and he seems to fit the number ten role that Emery wants him to play.
“I think they’ll do it. We know Villa will be tight, but they’ve done some clever trading around the PSR situation.
“I expect Monchi to be the master chess player and get it done. I expect Asensio to be one of the key targets, so they’ll make it happen.”

Aston Villa close in on £100m windfall
Aston Villa have faced Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues in recent years after spending close to the allowable losses limit of £105million over three seasons.
Villa face an “enormous” problem after their wage bill increased significantly last season following their qualification for the Champions League.
However, Football Insider has been told by finance expert Stefan Borson (4 March) that Villa are rapidly approaching £100million in prize money following their European exploits.
Emery’s side have a two-goal lead in the round of 16 clash against Club Brugge and could play PSG or Liverpool in the next round.
