Keith Wyness names the two Liverpool players who’ve ‘impressed him’, blasts big-name duo
Liverpool fans have already completely altered their expectations as the club’s poor run of form continues.
Arne Slot’s side are faltering in their Premier League title defence and a huge turnaround is needed if the Reds are to win the league.
Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday (25 October) evening was their fourth straight domestic loss, meaning they are on their worst run in the top-flight since January 2021.
The Merseyside club have already lost as many games this season as they did across the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign, putting their dreadful form into context.

Liverpool would be happy with a top-four finish
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Liverpool fans have now recalibrated their expectations for the season, due to recent results.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that the Reds supporters he has spoken to would be happy with a top-four finish.
Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice in the most recent window, signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and then Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
Wyness added that Slot has struggled to integrate his own players at Anfield after a busy summer.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, we’ve got to put this in context. Last year when Slot came in, he basically didn’t buy any players.
“As we know, he inherited Klopp’s team, and he let them play well, and they won the league. Now he’s had to put his own players in and try and build again for the future. Things aren’t going quite as well.
“It tends to be the price tag. It looks like that is what is weighing Isak down. I mean, Ekitike’s impressed me, Chiesa’s impressed me, but Mo Salah has not impressed. There are certainly some issues around midfield, as well as with the forwards and in defence.
“Most of the Liverpool fans I’ve spoken to are now settled for a top-four finish; they’d be happy with that, which is a big change in the last month.
“So things aren’t right, and there’s a lot still to get right. There’s no doubt there’s talent there to try and fix it. A few interesting cracks are appearing, but that’s all part of the beauty of the Premier League. It isn’t always the money that fixes things.”
Liverpool aren’t looking so clever now
Liverpool were praised for their summer business, with the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong joining Isak and Wirtz.

However, Wyness believes that the recruitment side of the club are “not looking so clever now” after recent form.
He said: “I’ve been giving them lots of praise for the last few weeks and months, about Michael Edwards and the whole group behind Liverpool and how clever they’ve been.
“Maybe they’re not quite that clever because things aren’t gelling quite so well.”
