Keith Wyness: ‘Rangers won’t get a better manager than Philippe Clement’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Philippe Clement is the “best Rangers could get” as he hit back at the Belgian’s “haters” following the Old Firm victory.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the much-maligned 50-year-old is “not the problem” at Ibrox.
Clement has been under pressure for most of the 2024-25 campaign with Rangers a huge distance behind Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.
He also faced ire for failing to lead the club to the league phase of the Champions League – instead dropping into the Europa League after qualifying.
However, the Belgian notched his first win over Celtic last week (2 January) in a memorable 3-0 thrashing at Ibrox.
Rangers soon undid their hard work by dropping points away at Hibernian just days later (5 January).
Clement is ‘the best Rangers could get’ in hot seat, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The players played for him in the Old Firm.
“They were up for it and they really got stuck into Celtic – and got the right result.
“All of a sudden, the Philippe Clement haters disappeared.
“He was the flavour of the month, until the draw at the weekend – there’s still a lack of consistency.
“But my issues are with the funding and backing available – not with the manager.
“There are some structural issues over recruitment and the strategic plan which need to be fixed going forward.

“Clement is not the problem.
“Right now, he’s the best they could get.”
