Keith Wyness reacts to bombshell Liverpool news – ‘big loss’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Liverpool are set to post a “big loss” financially – but will immediately redress the balance this season.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the bombshell financial news could explain the Merseysiders’ lack of transfer activity.
According to the Liverpool Echo (7 January), the Reds will announce a “heavy loss” when they release their financial report for the 2023-24 campaign at the end of February.
However, it is claimed the final figure will be “tens of millions” lower than the £100million figure reported elsewhere in recent months.
Liverpool had to live without Champions League football last term and are set to pay the price – despite winning silverware in the League Cup.
Clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over three seasons under Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Liverpool on course to bounce back from ‘big’ financial loss, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve seen the numbers reported, and it will be a big loss.
“It does explain, to a degree, why they’ve been so patient with the three players out of contract.
“If any one of those three players left, it would be a big expense to find a replacement.
“It may well be that they’ve been holding on and trying to get those contracts resolved.
“These losses are also the reason they haven’t had any bumper spending on transfers in recent years.
“It does look like they will have a bumper year in 24/25. There’s the Champions League, FA Cup, Premier League – it could be a bumper season.

“That sort of loss could be erased this season.
“It will be a big loss, but the squad is performing. What more can you ask?”
