Keith Wyness reacts to De Bruyne update – ‘Aston Villa are pushing the envelope’

Aston Villa are among the sides weighing up a move for Man City legend Kevin De Bruyne with his contract set to expire next month.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (1 May) that Villa are exploring a blockbuster deal for De Bruyne, 33, as an alternative to signing Marco Asensio permanently.

Multiple offers are expected for the playmaker, including from Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, but he is also attracted by the possibility of remaining in the Premier League.

Asensio has been on loan at Aston Villa since the mid-season window and has hit eight goals for the club.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on a potential De Bruyne “coup” at his old side.

Aston Villa could snub De Bruyne and move for younger target, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness appreciates Villa’s efforts to “push the envelope” but claimed they are likely to settle on a “younger investment” this summer.

The Midlands side are among the oldest sides in the Premier League – alongside the likes of Everton and West Ham.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t think it’s realistic for Villa.

“I’ve got to admire them for the creative thinking here. As I’ve said many times, I’ve got the greatest of admiration for Monchi and his team.

“They are pushing the envelope here.

“If there was a way to get De Bruyne in for a couple of seasons, it would be a coup – but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“I think his age his just against him. Villa are in the process of building a younger squad, and they’ll continue to do that – as tempting as it may be to go for De Bruyne.

“I think they’ll end up going for some younger investments.”

Aston Villa ready to sell wide man

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (30 April) that Aston Villa plan to accept offers for winger Leon Bailey this summer.

Emery is keen to offload Bailey, 27, and bring in a new wide forward capable of providing more cutting edge.

He has just two goals and four assists in 37 appearances across all competitions this season.
