Keith Wyness reacts to ‘surprise’ Leicester City points deduction twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leicester City are likely to “get away” with punishment for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2022-23 season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 67-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there is “very little chance” of the Premier League succeeding in their bid to punish the Foxes for their previous breach.

In a twist this week, the Premier League did not issue any charges for a breach of PSR in the 2023-24 season despite fears Leicester would fall foul of the regulations.

However, they added: “Issues as to the jurisdiction of the Premier League over Leicester in relation to PSR compliance are currently the subject of confidential arbitration proceedings.”

The Foxes were originally accused of a breach for the 2022-23 season but squashed the charge on appeal – a decision which has been challenged by the Premier League.

Premier League have ‘very little chance’ of punishing Leicester, says Wyness

Wyness insisted he cannot see why the Premier League are continuing to fight against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side in a case they have a slim chance of winning.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I was up early to see if any clubs were going to be put on the naughty step.

“But this is becoming a new date in the football calendar. It just shows how much the legal problems are coming into the consciousness of football right now.

“Even the general fans are starting to think about PSR. That’s interesting in itself.

“In terms of Leicester, I was surprised. I did think there was going to be a problem.

“The Premier League are still appealing against the appeal from last season’s verdict.

“I don’t know why they’re doing that. I see very little chance of that succeeding.

“It looks overall like Leicester have got away with it.

“If they have been PSR compliant, then good luck to them. They’ve still got a battle on their hands.

“I’m sure it’s a big weight off their shoulders. Leicester are a great organisation and they’re trying their best.”
