Keith Wyness reveals how much of Kalvin Phillips’ wages Man City could be paying after deal agreed

Sheffield United may be paying Manchester City up to £25,000 a week towards Kalvin Phillips’ wages.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season.

Sheffield United signed both Phillips and Joe Rothwell on deadline day to bolster their midfield options.

Man City were happy to let Phillips depart, with the 30-year-old having made just one appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Kalvin Phillips backed to do ‘great job’ at Sheffield United

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes £25,000 will be the “maximumSheffield United would be paying towards Phillips’ wages.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness is backing Phillips to be a success at Bramall Lane.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There’s no doubt at all that Sheffield United are not going to be able to pay those sort of numbers. I think they might be contributing maybe 20, 25 a week. I think that what would be the sort of maximum I would look at around that sort of level.

“I don’t think they will be able to afford much more in the Championship with no parachute payments, etc. So, look, yes, I think he’s a good signing. I’ve always believed he’s got, he’s been unlucky with some injuries and hasn’t quite had the chance to get some game time back to get fit.

“I think he can do a great job for Sheffield United. They need to do something to get themselves back stabilised and moving up again. So, yeah, I think with Chris Wilder, he’ll respond well. But yes, there’s no doubt that they are they’re getting subsidised heavily.

“He’s got to show himself again to be that player of quality he once was and it’s going to take a while to get him back in that fight, but the Championship is a tough league, but I think it will suit his style of play to a great degree and I think good luck to him to get back on the grass and doing the right thing again.”

When could Kalvin Phillips make Sheffield United debut?

Phillips could make his Sheffield United debut against Middlesborough in the Blades’ next Championship match this weekend.

The midfielder was not part of the Sheffield United squad that beat Oxford United 3-1, in a win which moved Chris Wilders’ side seven points above the relegation zone.

Following back-to-back defeats, Sheffield United are now unbeaten in three, and still have a slim chance of making the play-offs.
