Keith Wyness shares emphatic verdict on Everton’s Neal Maupay punishment

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the club will not pursue disciplinary action against insolent striker Neal Maupay.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted his outburst will leave a “black mark” against the 28-year-old for future suitors.

Maupay took to social media to troll Everton following the loss against Nottingham Forest last month (29 December).

He said, “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

The French striker is still under contract at Goodison but was loaned out to Ligue 1 side Marseille last summer with an obligation to buy at the end of the deal.

Maupay joined Everton from Brighton in 2022 but scored just once in 32 appearances for the Toffees.

Everton should ‘gloss over’ Maupay trolling, says Wyness

When asked if the Toffees could pursue disciplinary action, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think they will.

“They potentially could have done, but it’s been a while since he did it.

“It’s damaged him more than the club. He was certainly not held in high regard by the fans, and he hasn’t helped himself again.

“But I would think that future clubs would look at his behaviour as a black mark against him, and he’ll have to live with that now.

“He’s managed to score a couple of goals in France, but he hasn’t set the house on fire.

“I think it was disappointing behaviour and no need for it, really.

“It’s more an indication of his character.

“It could mean some clubs take a second look at his personality. Some may see it as a fighting spirit, but I don’t think it’s helped anyone – Everton just have to gloss over it.”
