Keith Wyness shares intriguing verdict on Michael Edwards plan as he makes Liverpool return

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has warned returning sporting director Michael Edwards against launching a “revolution” at Liverpool.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted that “keeping the ship in the right direction” post-Jurgen Klopp would be a “major success”.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group announced the return of Edwards on Tuesday (12 March) as their new CEO of Football.

Football Insider revealed last week (8 March) that the Anfield club are closing in on securing ex-Bournemouth chief Richard Hughes as their new sporting director.

Edwards warned against Liverpool ‘revolution’ next season

The duo’s first port of call will be to replace Klopp as manager after he announced his imminent departure in January.

Edwards was previously at Liverpool between 2011 and 2022 and has been credited with the signings of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Sadio Mane, Andrew Robertson among many players who have developed into superstars at Anfield.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “You’ve got to think that right now, being able to continue at the same level would be a success for Liverpool, Edwards and Hughes.

“They’re challenging for the league, there’s not much more they can hope for.

“If Hughes and Edwards can carry on at this level, continue playing attractive football, continue doing really well in the transfer market – that would be better than a revolution.

“They’ve got to keep the ship going in the right direction rather than rip everything up.

“That would be a major success in its own right.

“Keeping the stability behind the scenes will be key. I’m sure Edwards will have a big say in who the successor to Klopp will be, and there’s no reason why that machine can’t keep working.”
