Rangers firesale? Keith Wyness shares verdict on January exodus

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers should not sell too many players in the January transfer window despite needing a rebuild.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed new investment and a reshaping of the board at Ibrox should be first on the agenda.

Patrick Stewart has been appointed as Rangers’ new chief executive and will start later this month, while Malcolm Offord is no longer expected to become the new chairman – according to reports.

The senior leadership team at Ibrox will be expected to lead the Gers out of a troubling period, which has seen them hire three managers since Steven Gerrard’s departure in 2021.

Current boss Philippe Clement has Rangers sat third in the Scottish Premiership and already 11 points adrift of Celtic.

However, the Belgian has done well in the Europa League and the Glasgow club are well-placed to progress to the knockout stage.

Rangers should not sell first-team stars in January, says Wyness

When asked if Rangers could kick-start their rebuild with multiple January sales, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think to knee-jerk with too much change in January would be wrong.

They’ve got to take their time with this rebuild.

“They’ve got to bring in some new investment, reformat the board – that’s what they really need.

“They can give themselves this season to get up and running so they’re fast out the traps next summer.

“It’s a difficult time for Rangers.

“I’ve talked with the ex-CEO while I’ve been in Saudi, and he agrees that a total reset is needed.”
